Salton Sea North Shore Yacht Club renovation progress

The most significant recent task has been the sandblasting of the cinder block walls to remove decades of paint. This has restored the walls to their original bare appearance of 1958.

There appears to be a lot of interior framing work recently completed as well

Abandoned for over two decades, this building is now in the process of being restored to its former glory - thanks to $3.5 million in federal stimulus funding. When the renovation is complete, the building will reopen as a visitor center, museum, and community center.

The renovation is expected to be completed - ahead of schedule - sometime in January 2010.

The North Shore Yacht Club is an historically significant--not to mention architecturally significant--part of California's legacy. The North Shore Yacht club was the whimsical design of noted architect Albert Frey, who just happened to be a resident of the Coachella Valley. Completed in 1958 by developers Ray Ryan and Trav Rogers, North Shore Beach Yacht Club was one of the largest marinas in Southern California and carried a price tag of $2 million. Celebrities like The Beach Boys, Jerry Lewis, and the Marx Brothers partied there and / or docked boats at the marina.

This location is featured in the video Swing Out Sister - Fooled By A Smile.

Grand reopening of the Salton Sea History Museum. Now located at 72-120 S. Lincoln Street (end of road across creek), Mecca, CA 92254

  • fallout

  • @skyw4lka Talk about a scene form Fallout - check out the Bombay Beach video I shot earlier this year.

  • sounds like a good buying opportunity to me. i'd be willing to bet if the government invested 3.4 million there, they have bigger plans for it. i see potential here if they learned from their mistakes.

  • @optical76 This area does have LOTS of potential. While the rest of the buildings out here are quite rundown, this huge lake in the middle of the desert could once again be used for recreational activities - if some sort of public/private funding could be allocated to fix up the water....

  • What a disgusting use of tax dollars.

  • @49cop Only a portion (though I'm not sure how much) of the funding came from tax dollars. The long term plan is to entice investors to help with the eventual cleanup and and restoration of the Sea. This area COULD produce a TON of tax revenue (sales, boat rental, hotel tax, and more) once the lake is fixed and people start flocking to this area again. A massive lake in the hot desert would once again be a great opportunity for recreation.

  • Panning back and forth back and forth back and forth back and forth makes me want to be sick....refine your technique a bit bro.....other wise very interesting.

  • I have been visiting the Salton Sea for 30 years. Unless they get good water in that lake it will never succeed.

And if you can hold the camera steady and pan slowly you will have a much improved vid. Thanks for posting it.

  • cool vid although shakey

  • I want to see the sea be turn around. It'd be a cool place to visit if they can fix it. I'd hella go.

  • @imlegitbetch13 Yeah, now that Riverside County has kicked the museum out of the building, it's probably not getting much visitor traffic anymore.

  • @thenunas12 Cool that you live near here. I love visiting the Salton Sea - it's such an interesting an surreal place.
