Beautiful, inspiring and provocative artwork from 12 high school students now adorn previously stark utility doors of the Marriott Hotel, South First Billiards, Three Sixty Residences and The 88. The work from the San Jose Downtown Foundation's Downtown Doors arts program in 2009 (see below) remains intact around the Fairmont Hotel, Pavilion and San Jose Repertory Theatre -- in all, 37 pieces of art from 15 participating South Bay high schools are represented.

"This way, students get to display their art for two years vs. one, the program is able to expand into the SoFA area, a goal for the past few years, more high school students can be introduced to the San Jose art community and sponsors get more bang for their buck," said Diana Beechie, foundation president.

The program has grown from four doors and participants from two high schools in 2003. Yerba Buena and Cupertino high schools and Bellarmine College Prep each had their first winners this year.

"Downtown Doors has an extremely positive impact on the lives of the students whose art is selected and often is a turning point in how they view themselves as artists," Malcolm Bordelon, foundation trustee. "San Jose is lucky to have this program."

The original art is digitized, enlarged and transferred onto vinyl adhesive decals, then installed on the doors. Since the beginning of the program in 2003, the art of 90 different students has appeared on downtown doors.
