This African spurred tortoise is a true desert specialist in the Sahara. During the heat of the day it shelters in burrows that it excavates in wadis. They are surprisingly adept at crossing some very rough terrain despite their ungainly appearance.

The Saint Louis Zoo is one of several zoos working with the Sahara Conservation Fund to establish a protected area for Saharan wildlife. For more information on the Saint Louis Zoo's conservation programs, visit http://www.stlzoo.org/wildcareinstitute.
