Franz Schmidt - Piano Quintet G-Major - III. Sehr ruhig

I came across this gem by accident. String quartet plus piano, left-hand only. Some expressionist paintings from the same period as the music to go along.

This is in fact the original left-handed version of it. It's from the Korngold/Schmidt Sony recording that came out in 1998. Leon Fleisher didn't regain the use of his right hand until after that recording, I believe.

I have that Vienna Philharmonia Quintet recording at home. I wasn't aware it's the two-hands arrangement. The booklet mentions nothing about it. Especially for this movement however, I much prefer the Fleisher version which is so much more serene and soothing.

@vparseval I heard Fleischer live in this work, and altho musically sensitive, there was a slight "clumsiness" which isn't at all apparent here.I suppose that's normal with pianists who are not "natural" left-handers. Wittgenstein sounded really clumsy in his recordings! I'll investigate this disc now. Thanks for the info, and for the post.

A gem, absolutely, and a great pleasure with its visual accompaniment. Is this really the left-hand version? If so, it's amazingly good. I first heard it in the 2-hand version,(arranged by Friedrich Wuhrer),played by the Vienna Philharmonia Quintet, a "gem" of a disc, as is the whole work. The few left-hand versions i've heard so far sounded just a little clumsy, so whose is this? It's lovely, also the mellow harmonious strings.
