The science of ocean health

We now know enough to dramatically improve the health of our seas. With science to guide them, Californians are creating an underwater parks network that will allow marine plants and animals to thrive.

The north central coast network--between Mendocino and Half Moon Bay--is almost complete, and the community has come up with a plan that will protect key areas like the Farallon Islands and Point Reyes Headlands while leaving 90% of the coast open for fishing. Studies have shown that marine reserves and protected areas can help rebuild fish stocks, and restore the diversity and resilience of ocean ecosystems.
