在兩歲前,大概有百分之九十是扁平足,到成人的時候,只剩下百分之十到二十。一個正常的足底足弓,是由正常的足部骨頭及關節結構組合成類似弓箭的 "弓" ,再由足底的蹠膜及肌腱組合成類似弓箭的 "弦" ,這個弓箭的組合在支撐體重時就好像是足底避震的彈簧;在平躺時是休息的狀態,在站立、走路、及跑步的時候就被擠壓,這時候負擔體重的肌腱,尤其是後脛骨肌就會發生作用,­把足弓的頂部拉高,使得足弓保持彈性。扁平足會使得走路及跑步都使得足部承受更大的壓力,不容易走遠,也易累,跑步的跑不快容易腳痛,因此,多少在運動能力上受到了一些影­響。
