CHASING MAYA ROCKS is a feature-length documentary-in-progress about a Mill Valley-based rock band, "Chasing Maya," composed of six young musicians who are between 9 and 11-years old. They have been playing together since early 2007 under the guidance of band director, Derek Kudrow, who has also taught most of them to play their instruments. The film profiles the talented and motivated young band as it evolves and improves over two years, from their first major performance - a benefit for a children's shelter in Ethiopia - on March 8, 2008. The film features the writing and performing of the band's first song, "Winter for Me," focusing on a lonely soldier in the Iraq war. The film will also feature 4-camera coverage of a performance by the band in late 2009. In addition to profiling the evolution of a talented young band, this is also a film about good parenting and about fledgling youth activists who are concerned about social justice and want their music - and their lives - to make a difference in a troubled world. A backdrop to the film is the specter (and reality) of drastic cuts to school music programs.

"Stop bad things...." like inculcating children with values and ideas that make celebrity seem a natural and healthy aspiration, or guiding them towards a faux teen/young adult angst while they're still children.
