A remarkable journey - Transportation of the world's largest HVDC transformers

ABB is building the Rio-Madeira HVDC power super-highway that will bring clean hydropower from Porto Velho in the northwest to São Paulo, Brazil's main economic center covering a distance of more than 2,500 kilometers, making it the world's longest power transmission link. Transformers constitute one of the key products that will enable efficient and reliable power flow. Seven of these massive 600 kV transformers,each weighing around 400 tons, will travel all the way from Ludvika, Sweden to Brazil across rail, land and sea. Why didnt ABB manufacture it in Brazil ?

Once manufactures in oil and gas industry are required to manufacture oil and gas equipments in Brazil.

Abb should be required to manufacture this huge piece of engineering in Brazil.

So more Brazilians could make with engineering in rondonia state, instead of fishing and cattling, or forest devastions.

Thanks for your comment. The scope of delivery for this transmission link was divided between ABB in Brazil and ABB in Sweden. Seven units were delivered by ABB in Sweden and fourteen units were manufactured and delivered by ABB in Brazil. It is a good example of cooperation between factories in different countries in order to come up with the most economical and fastest delivery for the customer.
