Civilians Trapped in Sri Lanka Conflict Zone

About a quarter of a million people are trapped inside the 300 square kilometers of jungle where Sri Lankan troops have surrounded Tamil Tiger rebels. Thousands are marching to the United Nations offices in the northern city of Jaffna to urge intervention.

STORY:
Sri Lanka's government and human rights groups accuse Tamil Tiger rebels of forcing civilians to remain inside the shrinking conflict zone as human shields.

Their plight has been taken up by thousands in the northern city of Jaffna who marched on United Nations offices to demand the international organizations intervention.

[Elendaparam Thelepalam, Resident]:
"The Tigers are keeping our people by force and not allowing them to come to safety. They want to come to the liberated areas and live in peace."

[Jayamani Devi, Resident]:
"All my family members are there. My brothers, sisters, other relatives and friends. The Tigers are holding them against their will."

The rebels, surrounded by government troops inside 300 square kilometers of jungle, say the civilians are staying because they fear abuse by the military.

Aid agencies estimate that 250,000 people are trapped inside the conflict zone.

That figure is disputed by the government.

So too is a Red Cross estimate that hundreds have been killed or wounded in fighting in the last week.

Independent verification is virtually impossible because the war zone is off limits to reporters except on carefully shepherded tours by the military.
