@baltimorejohn It takes more energy to separate the oil from the shale than what the extracted oil would produce. When they give huge estimates for the amount of oil in shale oil this is what they are referring to. They never mention the energy required to extract it. Contrary to popular belief and what CNBC has been saying, there are not these giant deep underground reservoirs of oil, relatively speaking.

@pavilionking06 I know they get money and they shouldn't get a damn dime. But at the same token we're giving Venezuala billions to drill offshore while there's a moratorium on our drilling for oil. WTF?
-
@baltimorejohn Do you have any idea how many BILLIONS in tax subsidies oil companies like BP receive from the taxpayers currently?
-
@pavilionking06 That supposed free energy only produces a small fraction of the energy we need and has to be subsidized to by taxpayer to pay what it cost to build and run. If they were such great sources of energy they wouldn't need to be subsidized. China also buying up more oil than any other country also including the oil rigs that left the gulf china now is leasing to drill oil for them. They also have a damn that is so big it produces 20times more energy than Hoover.EPA wont let us do that
-
@baltimorejohn False, False and false. Its takes massive amounts of energy to extract and purify oil. You lose energy and profit simply trying to make a profit and provide energy. You make a one time investment in wind, solar, wave, geothermal, energy for example and all future costs are for routine maintenance in exchange for free energy. Why do you think nations like China are spending BILLIONS of dollars to become the #1 alternative energy provider on earth?
-
@pavilionking06 All Im sayin is this country (USA) has enough oil to last us over a hundred years in the Bakken oilfields alone not to mention ANWAR, Texas, the gulf and along our coast lines. We're just not aloud to get it without gov. approval which forces companies to drill reckless like in the gulf instead of easier methods.I'm for the cheapest energy possible that works.Alt.energy isn't cheap and isnt fully developed yet so why take away what woks b4 the free market developes the technology.

@baltimorejohn I'm an "Earth worshiper" because I have legitimate concern that our future is in jeopardy directly as a result of our dependence on a finite resource? "So is salt water and dirt?" We don't use salt water or dirt for energy so I'm not sure why you even brought that into the conversation. Us "Liberals" who actually care about the future prosperity of our nation & environment will continue to push for alternatives that not only make our nation secure but benefit our environment.
-
@pavilionking06 So is salt water and dirt. You as an earth worshipper should be happy if we run out of oil. Then we wouldn't be causing the global warming, pollution and exploitation of foriegn nations you and all you fellow liberals are so worried about. Like what Pres. Obama said about the need to necissarily skyrocket the cost of energy mainly the coal industry to force people to government controls. wake up man, you've been brainwashed.
-
@baltimorejoh Why haven't we run out? Does it really take a geophysicist's explanation? Oil is a finite resource that is not being replenished and the world as a whole is consuming oil more rapidly than ever before. Should we wait for it to become completely exhausted before we start searching for alternative options because "what we have works?"

@baltimorejohn Whats going on in Egypt is being caused by food shortages from all the wasted space of crops being used on corn to burn in our gas tanks along with the hyperinflation being caused from all the fiat money being printed by governments world wide and the brutality of a dictator. Not peak oil.
Portland is more expensive than Denver and gas lines, sheesh !
