@killbabymonkeys Yes, that's common in monkeys, not apes. A mother ape will put herself between a predator and the infant. A monkey will toss off her infant to escape. That’s how their hard-wired. I know it's nature, but it's one of the reasons I can't stand monkeys. Even a pregnant monkey will pop the newborn out if under stress so the predator will stop and eat it. But, the largest killer of monkeys in the wild is other monkeys. Males kill newborns all the time.
I noticed that the mother monkey ditched her baby so she could run faster to save herself. I've read about that - where a mother monkey will toss her baby hoping that the predator will grab the baby while the adult runs for cover.
