I can suggest an experiment for you to test this hypothesis. Simply put a one-ohm resistor between the earth ground connection and the base of the transistor. Also put a one-ohm resistor in series with the battery positive. Put your two scope probes across the resistors and run the setup and observe the currents going through both points on your scope display at the same time.
Your ultimate ammeter is your scope, much better than digital or analog hand-held multimeters.

There is a speculation that the increased brightness that you see in the lights when you connect the earth ground is due to the earth ground itself. Meaning that power is literally coming up from the earth ground and supplementing the power being supplied by the battery.

Just a general comment for your consideration. The bulbs lighting up reflect the fact that they are in the presence of a strong varying AC electrical field. It is this strong AC electrical field that is responsible for the wireless effects that you are seeing. The source of the field is the topsy-turvy coil. There may be some health ramifications from long-term exposure to a strong AC electrical field. The field induces currents in any conductor in the area, including the human body.

One last question if you dont mind...
You said that the spark gap is critical in reducing the heat on the circuit, and I have seen several locations for such a gap : ground, off the battery, back to the battery, high tension wire before CFL... Which would you recommend is the best places for the spark gap?
My 'mission' is to be able to wirelessly power a light, and then take that circuit and pack it in a backpack, and possibly do public demonstrations - but need to care for pacemakers too.....

That is exactly what we all dream about: Wireless power in a backpack not need to run of battery. We are experimenting and still learning - as in trying to understand how best we can extract and utilize this energy.
If we had the perfect answer and kit; it would be presented as such - Unfortunately wer are now still experimenting. Join us on energetic forum - AND experiment!

Hey Corrie, you got another nasty shock in this clip. A note of caution: You want to avoid having one part of your body making good contact with earth ground and touching any part of the setup with your hands. This would complete the high-voltage circuit through your body and current will pass through your chest. This could be lethal.

Since yesterday I am walking on a 30 mm Polyvinylacetate (foam) mat. I am now trying to figure out a more solid method. As for health issues for myself: I am already exceeding my life expectancy due to cancer by 4 months. But - YES that is still an issue. AC issue is actually on my mind since last night, and first thing I want to check this morning.

You are probably aware of the inventor Trevor Baylis, but if not look him up on Wikipedia. It's a very inspiring story and very much in line with your aspirations for helping the have-not people in the world by bringing them an affordable source of personal lighting.

Drev, thanks for this info. For this present lights I do not intend to take patent. Patent law has it that when a discovery is in public domain, nobody can make a patent for it. Now it is save in public domain. We just need to fine tune it.
Lab changed setup a bit - had wire mesh (first aluminum sieve 1mm, then steel - all 6 sides - but still energy is outside. Was walking on foam-carpet-foam-PVE and with rubber shoes - still gave me shock. I touched where low energy is ..........
