Any tips on growing barley by the way?
-
Great video. So, I'm going to try and grow two acres near the house this year. 2-row barley. Last year I just tried with a 50 pound bag on about half an acre in my Dad's field. The deer ate every shoot of it right after it started to produce seed. I want to try and grow it near the house this year so they'll be more apt to stay out of it. Looks like you harvest when it's totaly dry?

Oh and dont leave the crop standing too long when its dead ripe, the heads get brittle and break off after standing so long. Thats another benefit of swathing- is you prevent the heads from breaking off if its in a swath, instead of standing- waiting for the straight cut header. You can swath it, or straight combine it. Sometimes all the kernels in the head may not ripen at the same time, so swathing is nessesary to make all the kernels ripes at the same time.

2 row is good, we grow 2 row. \
We usually seed it at 1-2 bushels per acre.
You dont need to seed it as soon as the frost leaves the ground, wait till the soil is a little warmer. As its not a long season crop. it grows and matures fast. About three months after you seed it you can harvest it (weather condidtions pending )
Its a soft grain, so over-threshing at harvest can cause the kernels to crack.

Where about are you located?
Barley doesn't like hot and dry conditions.
It needs the heat, but it also needs plenty of water.
Yes we harvest when its dry, or close to. If not- we run it through the dryer to dry it down, to prevent heating in the bin.
