Edison Dohms Bradenton Southeast Seminoles Wrestling Co-Captain - WWSB ABC 7 Athlete of the Week

BRADENTON - Edison Dohms of Southeast High School has a unique perspective on life, but then again, this senior wrestler has had a unique journey through life.

"He was a childhood orphan in Colombia and was adopted by a wonderful couple here in Bradenton. He is now in the IB program, and he is an IB wrestler," says Seminoles wrestling coach Bob Thomas.

Dohms was 5 years old when he was adopted and his family brought him to Bradenton, away from very painful memories. "I basically went from orphanage to orphanage; foster home to foster home. Before that my mom was killed, and my brother and father disappeared," says Dohms.

Being orphaned and having been given a new lease on life has made Edison realize that he needs to accomplish everything he can in his lifetime. "So many things are taken for granted here. I just see things as opportunity and I didn't want to miss those opportunities. I saw how hard work and perseverance help you and I wanted to take advantage."

Dohms has accumulated 100 wins in his wrestling career at Southeast. "A very skilled wrestler/ athlete. He has been through our program for all 4 of his years. He is a very hard worker and it has brought him a lot of success," says Coach Thomas.

So much success on the mat, and a 3.83 GPA in the International Baccalaureate program also brought Dohms an early acceptance to the Air Force Academy. He feels that he and the academy are a perfect fit. "It fulfills one of my philosophies in life: balance, wholeness...to be a renaissance man, balancing things physically, mentally, spiritually and academically. I push myself and the Air Force seems to embody that."

Dohms is competing in the regional wrestling tournament, wrestling in the talent-loaded 125 pound weight class. But he has a philosophy for that road-block as well. "I just have to truck through, work hard and push myself. Heart beats experience, and that's the mindset. Heart over experience."
