This video tells the story of a man who lived 20 years at the municipal garbage dump in Cozumel, Mexico, and of the strong bond that developed between him and the dogs and cats that were abandoned there. Anastasio May, known as "Gabacho", has made a living picking and selling recyclable materials during 20 of his 49 years. A company hired him and two other men two decades ago, to separate recyclable metals and other waste. When that company vanished soon after, these men stayed at the dump. During all these years, Gabacho has seen hundreds of dogs and cats abandoned by their owners there. This is not an uncommon practice for people who suddenly dont want their pets anymore. With his very limited resources, Gabacho has helped many of these animals, and sadly he has also seen many of them die. During this last year, IFAW and the local humane society helped him with medicines and treatment for the 15 dogs and 9 cats that have become his family. Unfortunately, he is now about to lose everything, as modern garbage management projects are coming, and Gabacho and his dogs will have to leave.
Sure, as an animal lover I am very impressed how IFAW has stepped in to help but.............what of the men, don'
t they deserve rescued too?
