This rotating laser distance scanner is my friend's project. I manage to get his comments and advice regarding this matter. I hope it answers a lot of questions regarding this video.

"I am trying top simulate the payload for an indoor UAV for building inspection. The idea is that the sensor will be rotated at a fixed angle via the stepper motor. This will simulate the yaw of the UAV whilst in the air. The sensor I am using is a URG-04Lx available from Hokuyo automatics. You could start with looking at sonar, infrared or possibly photo-grammetric analysis for alternate methods. I would recommend looking at Arduino drones for some more threads about robotics etc. I am using a PIC programmer for the control of the stepper motor, but Arduino is also available and possibly easier to program. Best advice use the forums on the internet and ask fun questions. Hope this helps a bit. - M"
