Over the past few years a new way to catch sea smelts has been spreading like wildfire. The Fishin' Hole Sea smelt rigs are the best, and most deadly weapon you can have on the ice. 3 drop loop glow flies, wieghted, with snap swivels. Nothing has outfished this rig yet.

  • @sprattoo Also I am dropper looping these flies. Depending on where you get them from, the sabikis are just knotted, which weakens the line strength by almost half

  • @sam805236 It's not a sabiki. The sabikis are run 6 long and end up in a tangled mess. They are too spread out to fish in a smelt shack on the ice.The glow is not anywhere near the hook.

I tried sabikis about a hundred different ways.

The flies are much more effective, and on a run of three more manageable.

Also Sabikis don't use swivels, another problem I had in an ice shack.

  • Congratualations, you made a sabiki rig the japanese have been using for who knows how long. These rigs are HUGE where I live in Southern California. No need for bait though, the rigs work fine as is. I can usually catch 20-30 jacksmelt in a few hours at the pier.
