Part one of Andrei Markovits' keynote presentation from the European Identities Conference held in October 2010 at the University of Guelph by the Department of European Studies. Markovits is the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and the Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics and German Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a renowned scholar in many areas including European politics and social movements. This talk discusses some of his recent work on comparative sports culture in Europe, making reference to his most recent book, Gaming the World: How Sports are Reshaping Global Politics and Culture (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2010).
