Good to have your brothers TX3 instrument passed on to a good user. Thanks also for pointing out that this unit lives as a Fluke 185/183 too, I can find one of those. At my previous work place we had Fluke 8060A's which were terrific also, as they say, "You can't afford cheap stuff. . . "

It sure runs with a SMPS you can tell by the waveform and duty changes, but how does it provide the different output voltages needed by the components, is a mystery to me, Linear regulators ? LDO's ? or maybe very low dropout zenner diodes ?
Name a multimeter under $40 that is fast reading and accurate.

@Ibringthetruth1 I don't see all that's out there, but you can get a used Fluke 27FM on eBay for something close to that. The fastest ones are non auto-ranging. A Beckman 310 or an old manual range Fluke would be good. Faster reading and accurate with more digits of resolution are probably out of this price range for the most part.

I really like the TX3. It has a Decibel function - invaluable in our workplace (Post Production Video/Audio) and a good capacitance scale for those pesky power supply rebuilds. One really "out there" thing that I have to have is the instant response continuity beep, this is essential when using a dial gauge to set the ignition timing on my vintage Yamaha two-stroke motorcycles! Wish I could get another one.

@sirclip Yeah, the TX-3 is really good. I also like the Fluke 87 series 5. The continuity is just as fast, and more audible versus ambient noise. My brother left me his TX-3 before he died. That makes it special to me.
