Rare Pink Diamond for Auction in Hong Kong

A rare, 5-carat pink diamond to be auctioned by Christie's in Hong Kong on December 1 is expected to fetch between $5-$7 million, near world record prices.

The stone's "vivid pink" is considered near perfect and the Christie's jewelry head, Vicky Shek has touted it as one of the best colored stones to appear in recent years.

[Vicky Shek, Christies Hong Kong Jewelry Division]:
"And this pink is just straight vivid pink and also the clarity is potentially flawless. For colored diamonds the clarity with some black spots is very common. So this diamond with a top color and the top clarity is the finest and the rarest thing we ever saw in auction."

Christie's has a track-record of putting rare polished stones up for sale in Asia, given its confidence in the depth of the Asian market for the world's top gemstones and artwork.

Also up for auction, a whopping 16.65-carat Sapphire ring and a 9.03-carat oval vivid yellow diamond ring, both expected to make over a million dollars.

Christie's auction comes as a sagging dollar drives some investors to convert currencies into gold and other assets.

"After the crisis from last year onwards, I found that more collectors are looking for the top quality jewelry and diamonds for the investment to keep the value and also for sale. So for rare stones like this, even for pink, yellow, blue red, green - these rare stones are very popular in this market."

While the world's most expensive jewel ever sold at auction a blue diamond that fetched $24 million last year, top red and pink gemstones are also known for stratospheric valuations.

@WebstatsArt it is pink bcoz of the damaged crystal lattice absorbing all colors except pink that's why you see them as pink now these damaged crystal lattice can be repaired by heating the diamond w/ intense heat & pressure causing it to revert back to its original colorless to near colorless crystal but bcoz pinks are generally rarer than white diamonds only brown diamonds are treated as such. :)

@WebstatsArt I saw a documentary that spoke of the Pinks of Argyle. It said the nobody knew just why the diamonds were pink. Now that being said, I am certainly not a gemologist. I'm just reapeating.
