they cleaned much of the K river. After the new water reclamation center was built in the late 80s, I remember the mayor of Kzoo drinking a glass of water right from the reclamation input into the river.

The Kalamazoo was horribly polluted in the 1970's, and PCB's linger. But the stretch of the river shown in this video isn't any better or worse than any other river in Michigan. In fact, there are several portions of the river near Albion that support brown trout, which cannot tolerate pollution.

Yeah, I fell in just east of Ft. Custer. The next day I was feeling horrible and sick. Go figure!
By the way, I know there is an drop-in at an area east of Custer, at an elderly couple's house that charge about $1 to drop off and park. Do you know the streets / intersection that I am talking about? I forgot where it was.

Ok. I enjoy your videos. Just promise me you'll be careful in the future. Never drink or bath if you feel it might be contaminated.
The Kalamazoo River is one of the most polluted rivers in America. Did you really go near it?

Yes, the reach around Battle Creek and Kalamazoo is contaminated with PCBs and Mercury. as far as I can tell, the area upstream where we were is considerably less contaminated. If you are going to paddle in the midwest, a certain amount of pollution is unavoidable. Is there some risk, undoubtedly, but after all, we neither drink it or fish in it, I know many paddlers who frequently paddle rivers like the Kalamazoo, and they have no adverse affects,
