  • And what do you do if the popcorn was painted over?

  • Here's a tip: If the ceiling was indeed painted, try using a 1/10 ratio of acetone and hot water into a pump sprayer. Allow it to eat at the latex paint for approximately 10-15 minutes, then scrape away. This worked effortlessly for my ceiling project at my house.

  • @dub2 The first thing to look at is if the popcorn was painted over after it was sprayed. If the popcorn was not painted all you need is a clean pump sprayer filled with warm water and a wide putty knife for scraping off the popcorn. Take one area at a time. After scraping you should see bare unprimered drywall. You must primer it before spraying mud for texture. Make sure you float the drywall smooth (smooth all irregularities and seams) and all popcorn is removed before you primer it.

  • @IdolHans I'm thinking about this procedure. I hope I don't have to float the drywall with mud before knock down. Do you know if there is a way to identify what your in for as soon as you scrape. i.e. If i see raw drywall underneath vs. primed underneath? Thanks.

  • @PLRODARTE --that ceiling he removes looks like it was painted because it's all gooey looking. When we scraped ours, it was unpainted and just fell out as loose granules of popcorn ceiling material. After that all I had to do was primer it, spray orange peel on it and knock it down before painting it.

  • @IdolHans nightmare? he makes it look simple.

  • It looks like that popcorn was painted over--what a nightmare to remove (if it's painted)
