  • I just have one point, you said you should try to archive a complicated position, but doesnt that depends on your style? If you like those dry simple positions you shouldnt change style just to defeat one person, because you will just loose. He doesnt need to be stronger, my bogeyman is weaker overall than me, but I cant defeat him.... I think the most important thing is that you believe in defeating him. But great video, I hope for some new!

  • I appreciate your view furrer. I am humble enough to admit that I don't know everything about chess and these videos are all about sharing my experiences rather than an absolute truth. What I would say is that if you prefer a dry or simple style and your Bogeyman can handle it - I would take that as a sign to try something new against him. My experience is that tough opponents are only overcome in positions that are difficult for both sides. try it once and let me know how you get on!

Congratulations on beating your bogeyman! I would just like to say what a great start you have made on YouTube. Your first chess video is a great inspiration to me, I think many of us have that 'bogeyman' which we think we cannot beat.

At the end of the part one I thought white was quite hopeless, but was surprised at the comeback...

Just a small question, could you please further explain tip #3 (offering draw) and the effects behind it? I am slightly unclear.

    Thanks.

  • The thoughts behind the draw offer are this:

    (1) Your bogeyman thinks he can beat you

    (2) By offering a draw when the game is at a critical juncture, you raise the stakes. i.e. if he turns it down he is out on a limb so he may take a risk that is not objectively correct.

I hope this makes some sense, please feel free to drop me a line if you want to go over it some more.

  • when he forked the Bishop and Knight with the pawn, do u think it is a good idea to take the pawn on h7 with bishop with a check ?

  • Lol i've got a boogey player at my chess club too...

  • if you make it more complex you make it more likely for him to go wrong, but its also more likely for you to go wrong.

  • gives us confidence Costas surely...........Thanks..i m gonna carry it with me to my "bogeyman"

  • I just turned the postitions postitional, something that I like, eventhought I´m only 14. He couldnt play that kind of position very well :) I also got a draw against a FM 2 days ago (rapid chess)!!!!!! But then we had to play a rematch (there was nothing about that in the rules...), where I was black. I got a really fine potition (+0,80 acording to Fritz), but I played some bad moves and he eventually won (he played the blitz much better than me).

  • Its just so that he like those tactical postitions, and normally he wins against me in those. Last time I played against him (15 min games, one black one white), I got 2 nice draws (very "noobish" torunament (schoolchess), the clocks werent working, so I couldnt really see how much time I had left).

  • Bxh7 is a valid move, and the main alternative to Bd3 that I considered at the board. After 12 ...kh7 13 Nce5 (say) a different structure arises to that of the game. I preferred to have a position where I, rather than my opponent, had the two bishops as I believe they offer greater possibilities - but this is just a matter of taste. It's not the be all and end all, but Fritz (we are human players after all)thinks that both continuations are broadly equivalent.

  • I like bXh7 as well
