Nathan was diagnosed with Autism on November 1, 2007. (he turned 2 at the end of August 2007) We started the GFCF diet in the beginning of February 2008. (see other video). We have added gluten back into his diet. I originally thought it was casein, but went ahead and did both in the beginning. I noticed an immediate change in his attention span. Gluten free proved to be a bit more of a struggle than the casein, so we added the gluten back in. (I have been watching his behaviors and was going to take the gluten back out if needed. This video was taken March 5, 2008. He started eating gluten again in the middle of February. We are currently casein free. Nathan is receiving 4 hours/week of speech, 1 hour/week of special instruction, 4 hours/week of preschool for children with speech delays, and 6 hours/week of Applied Behavior Analysis therapy. I also try to work one on one with him about 5-10 hours a week. This week has been great. His eye contact seems better, he is imitating others better, and he seems more interested in learning.

  • i find it interesting that this gluten / casein issue is relevant to autism... im 30 years old.. I have just recently discovered that If i have any dairy products i have a number of reactions to it.. I never knew why i felt that way.. i just was dealing with it my whole life.. basically if i have any dairy, i get so irritable, and get violent due to the irritability. I get itchy all over my body, and the next day i usually feel down as the stuff filters out of me..

  • Thanks for replying. I really feel that Nathan was experiencing those feelings also. (but he had no way of letting me know.)

  • how about vitamin D deficiency - that can cause many allergies and effect the blood sugars.

  • Are you aware that there is also casein in spinach and in quinoa?

Just thought I'd share this, as I know not everyone knows this.

Congratulations on taking charge end doing what is best and necessary for your child.:-)

  • LOL

  • interesting...something to look in to.

  • The whole western diet based on wheat and dairy is an aberration an anomaly, in simple words "wrong". We are starting to admit that wheat flour in all bread and casein in milk are both bad even for normal people. I experimented with it myself and all the migraines that I always felt before and memory funny disorder are gone after stopping to eat bread and removing milk and dairy products out of my diet. I eat rice, potatoes and sweet potatoes which are far more nutritious.

  • hi,, many people have these problems without knowing it. the whole western diet is based around milk designed for baby cows and wheat (which in the wild is considered a rare plant). odd when you think of it that way!!!
