HOW GAIN Muscle Now¡ http://howgainmuscle.org
The dumbbell shoulder press is an exercise which effectively recruits the muscle heads of the shoulder, notably the front and side heads, as well as the triceps, the muscle to the rear of the upper arm. The over head dumbbells press is therefore a great exercise to implement into an upper body weight training session, or into a session which aims to target the shoulder muscles.

The benefit of performing the dumbbell variation of the shoulder press over the barbell variation is the unilateral nature of the exercise. When performing the exercise with a barbell both arms work together to press up the bar, so if one side of the body is stronger than the other it will tend to overpower the exercise somewhat, further leading to imbalances in muscle strength and size. The dumbbell variation is unilateral, requiring each side of the body to work independently to lift an equal resistance. If one side of the body is weaker than the other it will still lift an equal resistance to the stronger side, allowing for both sides of the body to receive equal stress, leading to equal size and strength.

If the aim of the shoulder press is to target the upper body, the exercise should be performed with a full range of motion to recruit both the shoulders and triceps effectively. The exercise would begin with the dumbbells at shoulder level at either side of the head, with the dumbbells then pressed over the head to full lock out at the top of the exercise.
