A pianist, theorist and conductor, Professor Alexander Alexandrovich Alexandrov (1927-2004) of the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music in Moscow was a man of colossal erudition and skills.
Born in Yalta (USSR), he graduated from the Piano and Theoretical Faculties of Odessa Conservatory, and later from the Faculty of Symphony Conductors in Kiev.
As a conductor, Alexandrov worked with symphony orchestras in Russia. He also toured extensively as a soloist-pianist and made several recordings. He was particularly well-known as a brilliant interpreter of the 18th century clavier music. However, he dedicated most of his musical career to teaching. His phenomenal pedagogic intuition and knowledge brought a multidimensional quality to his teaching: creative analysis of the dramaturgy of form and conductor's thinking that organizes musical time became important tools in our piano performing experience.
He has been a professor at the Leipzig Conservatory and was professor at the Rachmaninov Institute in Tambov. Since 1987, his teaching during the International Rachmaninov Summer Masterclasses was highly sought by Russian and foreign performers and teachers alike.
We toured a lot with Alexandrov throughout Russia: while he was giving lectures and master classes, we, his students, were playing concerts and were illustrating his seminars.
This was an unforgettable time!
