Premiers: Monday 4th May 2009, Network 10 (Australia)

The Recruits is an observational documentary series that follows a group of police recruits as they embark on the long and gruelling journey towards becoming fully-fledged police officers.

With unprecedented access to the New South Wales Police academy and its recruits out on the beat, the series will give audiences a rare glimpse at whats required of the people we entrust to keep the peace and uphold the law.

The series will follow two groups of trainee officers. The first group are student Recruits beginning 8 months of gruelling training at the NSW Goulburn Police College. From fresh-faced 18-year-old school leavers to married men and women looking for a career change, this group of recruits will be put through the ringer to test if they have what it takes to be cops. Well see them leave family and friends for 8 months and well come to understand the personal and financial sacrifice each of them make with the goal of becoming a police officer. Well be with them as they tackle their first fitness assessment, learn how to handle and fire their weapon and perform a textbook arrest. But not all of them will make it. It may be that the financial pressures are too great, or that the physical training is simply too much for them to cope with. Whatever the reason, some recruits will leave the academy prematurely with their dreams of becoming a police officer in tatters.

For those who do make the grade, well see them graduate from the academy as the second group in the series. Its a ceremony rich in symbolism: they remove the blue student bands from their caps to reveal the blue and white checks that are an international symbol of policing. But their time to celebrate and reflect is short many will find themselves on duty the following day. The pressure is on, and as Probationary Constables, these recruits will have to rely on their training and intuition to get them through some very tricky situations. Well witness the landmark moments in any officers career: their first arrest, attending a crime scene, dealing with alcohol fuelled street violence and the moment every officer dreads, their first fatality.

The Recruits will be as action packed and enthralling as any young police officers career. The road towards becoming an officer in uniform is a long and bumpy one, and our cameras will be there to capture every moment of drama, elation and disappointment as students are transformed from dedicated civilians into highly trained police officers.

Cordell Jigsaw have teamed up with the NSW Police Force:
"Policing is a tough job it involves ordinary people doing extraordinary things to make a difference in our society. Therefore the choice to become a police officer is not to be taken lightly. It requires dedication, commitment and sacrifice from the moment you start at the police college until the day you retire. Recruits was granted unprecedented access to the NSW Police Force College and with our police on the beat. It gives a raw and honest view of what it is like to become a police officer the challenges, successes and heartache faced. I am immensely proud of my police who are involved in this program which may help the public better understand the job we do for them." - Commissioner Andrew P Scipione APM

The NSW Police Force has granted Recruits unprecedented access to the Police force. For the first time, cameras have been allowed to film at the Police College in Goulburn. This includes specialised training scenarios, the pistol firing range where Recruits learn to handle a gun and simmunition areas custom built for instruction on high risk crime scene scenarios.

Specially designed in-car cameras will take the audience on the road on patrol with our Probationary Constables as they respond to all manner of situations. These cameras follow every moment of every police day. the dash to emergencies, the endless routine work and the quiet down times where police debrief. Cameras have also been allowed into the police custody room where suspects are processed.

  • hey i was just wondering if it is possible to become a police officer if you do your schooling through tafe or distance education ?

  • @xXSoRightXx

Distance Education (D.E.) can be during session 1 only as Sessions 1a and 1b, which takes about 6 months. Basically, it splits the on-campus (full time) session into two and making it twice as long.

Session 2 has to be completed on-campus, which you complete in just over 3 months.

I strongly recommend this course as it's not just a training ground for a fulfilling policing career but also prepares you to deal with most of life's many challenges, etc.

  • what's the educational level you need to become a police officer?

  • @boredismdotcom

HSC or equivalent minimum academic qualifications as required when applying for Uni.

The Associate Degree in Policing Practice is the course you study at the NSW Police College in Goulburn with the academic side managed by Charles Sturt University. All police training is provided by NSW Police.

  • @Sentinel247 thankyou for the quick and informative reply ! :)
