Whatever one thinks of the man's other politics, Algirdas Paleckis rose to the immense credit of his country at a conference in Vilnius, Lithuania on 16 November 2011.
The just-concluded session, called 'Antisemitism, xenophobia, racism, discrimination, totalitarian temptations and new trials of tolerance' produced interminable government PR, obfuscation, deflection, trivialization, excuse-making, the penchant for talking about all except the topics at hand and even a lashing out at Jewish writers who dare to comment upon antisemitism and Holocaust revisionism in the region. When Mr Paleckis spoke,
the audience was shaken (and a smallish portion visibly delighted) by the bold right-to-the-point comments he made from the floor in the course of three minutes. November 16th 2011 at the conference 'Tolerance and totalitarianism: challenges to freedom' held at the Tolerance Center in Vilnius, Lithuania.
