Hey, we were funding Ba'ath party criminal killings and its weapons program by buying oil from Iraq. So we should have stopped buying oil? No, then criminals would have traded with Iraq instead. There was a death toll resulting from funding these guys that was attributable to US, and a country might reasonably have attacked us for funding them down the road.
