Equality & Respect: How I'm Equal to Hugh Jackman

According to the Declaration of Independence, we're all created equal. But Professor Aeon Skoble is not as rich as Bill Gates, as tough as Vin Diesel, or as sexy as Hugh Jackman. To Professor Skoble, the Declaration intends for us all to be treated equal before the law. Put another way, we should all have equal freedom to choose our own respective paths to happiness as long as we do not infringe on the freedoms of others.
Treating people as equals means that we should show equal respect for the choices they make. That means that, although we may disagree with others, we should respect their preferences for jobs, tv shows, music, etc... The legal system should show equal respect for persons by respecting their rights equally, not by interfering with the outcomes of people's choices. If we try to produce equality in some other fashion, we will necessarily violate people's freedom to choose.

In a true libertarian society, there would be no laws except for property rights violations. If you attack me you violate my property--my body. If a billionaire killed someone they would be prosecuted just as they would now.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Ha! Shows what you know. Libertarians generally believe that the wealthiest members of society should MAKE the laws, and poor people shouldn't have any input aside from "choosing not to do business" with certain plutocrats.
"What's that, you say? A billionaire industrial magnate enjoys hunting poor people for sport? Well, if not being murdered was so important to them, they'd pay for private security. They can't afford it, you say? Must be because they're lazy - we're better off without 'em!"

This is not about me and my ability to be rich. What I am talking about is rich people being above the law. (And they are at times). An offense you commit can be met with heavy jail time while a billionaire can commit the same act or an even worse one and never be prosecuted. Are you telling everyone met with this mistreatment that it's their fault simply because they never achieved billionaire wealth?

He didn't defend the status quo. He defendet the principle of equal opportunity and equal protection under the law in contrast to equal outcomes for example via quotas etc.
