Black is the Colour is a traditional Scottish ballad either brought to the US by Scottish immigrants or written by them in the Appalachian Mountain region. It was first recorded by John Jacob Niles, an American folk music transcriber/musician in the 1940's. The song has been performed by many different artists including Nina Simone, Joan Baez, Hamish Imlach, Christy Moore and Esther Ofarim.
