In heavy rain and strong winds at Football Park, Port Adelaide shrug off a late charge by Richmond to win an amazingly low-scoring game narrowly, despite not kicking a goal after the thirty-second mark of the third quarter. Although the Power won, their score was their lowest until the corresponding game of 2010.
The match set many important records:
1) the last match to date where both teams scored four or fewer goals.
-- Although there have been 115 such games since the VFL began in 1897, only thirteen have occurred since 1921
2) the last match to date where both teams failed to score 40 points
-- Of 179 occurrences, only 23 have occurred since 1921
3) the lowest winning score since Round 13, 1989 and the fifteenth lowest since Richmond joined the VFL in 1908
-- the only lower winning scores against Richmond were two famous games in late 1927
4) the lowest aggregate score since Round 13, 1989, Essendon v Footscray at Windy Hill (51 points)
-- the lowest since is as much as 85 points between Melbourne and Adelaide in April 2009
5) besides being the Power's lowest aggregate score on record, it is the fourth lowest ever in a Richmond game behind two in 1927 and against Fitzroy in 1908
6) the lowest aggregate score for any interstate V/AFL game: the next lowest is 81 points in the 1997 Fremantle v Sydney game
7) the first match since Collingwood v Fitzroy, Round 22, 1981 where no player kicked more than one goal
8) the last time to date Richmond have scored four or fewer goals
9) Port Adelaide's winning score was the third lowest of the season, a feat exceeded only in 1976 and 1977 (where one match provided the season's two lowest scores) and equalled in the 1927 Grand Final.
