Discovery STS-128 launched at 11:59 p.m. on August 28, 2009. We arrived at KSC Visitor Complex 6 hours before launch and got the best, least obstructed spot at the center (along the short wall parallel to main road at the front entrance, behind the shuttle engines). KSC is about 7 miles from the launch pad and you can really hear the crackle and roar of the engines. It is also a great place to spend the day with kids while waiting for the launch, and there are large video screens & loudspeakers following every step of the launch. The only downside is that the treeline obscures your view of the shuttle on the launch pad. This was the last night launch of the Space Shuttle. It looked like a sunrise, except much faster & louder!
Will be at KSC for the next mission. :) You suggest 6 hrs ahead of time to get the best spot?

It gets very crowded very quickly. Get there early with chairs/towels to save your spots & then go enjoy the Space Center exhibits! Unfortunately the shuttle pad is obscured by trees at even the best spot at KSC, but you'll see it within a few seconds after liftoff.
