Immortal song of humanity and its great witness, the river Brahmaputra. This song was also re-sung in Bangla (Ganga boichho keno?) and Hindi (Ganga bahti ho kyun?)

Images belong to various copyright holders and haven't been edited. They're juxtaposed to trace the course of the Brahmaputra and its tributary Lohit (the song cries out to "budha luit"), from Manasarovar at the foot of Mt. Kailash to the Sunderbans. The song itself is Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's, of course. Apologies for the low quality audio.

This one's for my ba.

  • Actually the song does not say about the tributary river Lohit, but about brahmaputra itself. In Assamese Brahmaputra is also known as "Luit" (in Sanskrit Lauhitya).

  • Yes I know, but it seemed apt to include the river Lohit too.

  • Yes..aich08 is right!!! He has always said its an inspired song from ol' man river..its even mentioned in the back cover of cassette...I have it...He is not like these days plagiarist like mahesh bhatt - all of who's movies are copied from english films....so mr. subhrajit..get ur facts right before commenting....:P

  • @subhrajit123 "A straightaway rip off from Paul Robson's Ol' Man River ... without any acknowledgements..."

in fact Bhupen Hazarika has always stated Paul Robson's influence....n in most of his shows he has the habit of singing Paul Robson's version first...n then only moving to his assamese version !

  • Awesome song

  • Audio quality is just fine. In fact, it is in this audio quality that I first heard the song :) M not sure if there is another version of it in better quality.

I see my uncle's national panasonic player when I hear this song.

Is it like, Paul Robson called Mississipi an old man, so bhupenda called brahmaputra burha luit, and now all call it burha luit? or did we call it burha luit before bhupenda called it so?

  • excellent!
