Here is a (very) short demo of the iPad lighting control system we developed for Marco Cochrane's gorgeous sculpture Bliss Dance.
The sculpture contains around 50 DMX LED fixtures that can run pre-programmed custom patterns, or be controlled in real-time by the iPad application. A combination of a custom app and custom hardware allows the observer to change colors over any part of the sculpture or exterior lighting by simply selecting a color from the palette and dragging their finger(s) across the iPad.
The app also has accelerometer-sensitive control modes, ripple modes (where you touch a point and waves of color ripple out from it), strobing, and various other effects.
On the hardware side, a small custom circuit board establishes an adhoc WiFi network to receive communication from the iPad and translate the controls into DMX to drive the lighting. At a minimal cost, this embeddable solution which is smaller than an iPhone is able to drive over 100 RGB fixtures at a rate of around 20fps.
Stay tuned for a longer video showcasing the different modes and a peek under the hood.
