The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a World Heritage Railway. It is one of the very few remaining steam operated railways in the world.

Opened to traffic on June 15,1899, this 46 km. meter gauge (1000 mm) track is the steepest hill railway in India; and the only one of its kind with a rack-and-pinion traction, operating on a gradient of 1 in 12.50 i.e. 1 foot ascent/descent for every 12.50 feet of travel.

The X Class engines with wheel arrangement 0-8-2T, were built between 1914 and 1949 at the Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works (SLM), WInterthur. Few of these are still in active service on this line. Three of the vintage coal-fired engines have now been successfully converted to oil-firing at the Indian Railways workshop at Golden Rock, Tiruchirappalli.

Seen in this video is the coal-fired steam engine #X-37392 chugging uphill toward Coonoor, en route to Ooty, with the passengers from the Chennai-Mettupalayam Nilagiri Express.

V.M.Govind Krishnan's book: "NMR [Nilgiri Mountain Railway]-From Lifeline to Oblivion", documents the efforts of the public to thwart the moves of the Indian government to dismantle this unique railway, and keep it in running condition.

  • Just make this electric line and it will be smooth and safe ride without noise and air pollution. Anyway, after all, Indian citizens do not want to have the British left-overs to call them as heritage.

  • @avinashi07 - Steam Engine suffers from many disadvantages - lack of fuel efficiency, lack of energy efficiency, air pollution, noise pollution ... And if you consider the efforts to get the coal from earth and to transport that from that location to any place and energy spent to get that - if you add everything together, the final efficiency will be far less than a diesel powered engine or a electric power engine. And all these is for what ? for heritage ? Big LOL. Be in Real World !!!

  • @avis1001 - It is better that you don't pass comments without adequate knowledge. Steam loco does not cause any significant amount of pollution. The Thermal Power Plants that produce electricity pollute the atmosphere a lot more. And electrification on a mountain line and that too a world heritage line is pointless

  • another great vid of NMR !

  • How fantastic, i am traveled one time, so beueueueueutytytytyty

  • @avis1001 u wanna reinstall ur mom? a modern man only can do something with her to get a modern kid like u... not ur dad... what say?

  • Excellent information about NMR. Good work. Please ignore comments from avis1001, relishing the charm of steam is not everybody's cup of tea.

  • wtf r you? think about the future generations - they will suffer due to these pollution of the surroundings caused by this f*** steam loco, which releases CO and CO2. At least Get Educated.

  • u r a gr8 idiot in this world to ask for electrification of this beautiful heritage railway.

  • What a Great Pollution caused by this loco? Don't know when the govt. wakes up installing electric loco to get rid of this pollution.
