Platooning may be the new way of travelling on motorways in as little as ten years time - and the EU-financed SARTRE project has carried out the first successful demonstration of its technology at the Volvo Proving Ground close to Gothenburg, Sweden. This is the first time the EU-financed development teams in SARTRE try their systems together outside the simulators. Vehicle platooning, as envisaged by the SARTRE project, is a convoy of vehicles where a professional driver in a lead vehicle drives a line of other vehicles. Each car measures the distance, speed and direction and adjusts to the car in front. All vehicles are totally detached and can leave the procession at any time. But once in the platoon, drivers can relax and do other things while the platoon proceeds towards its long haul destination.
@1337H4xx0r90 so you may as well crawl behind the truck then. correct.

great!! I don't understand those "keep it all the same forever"-comments, I doubt that anyone has really thought about the idea.
you can save a lot of fuel because you can use the big draft of the truck, in fact accidents will be much less severe because the relative velocity between the cars is nearly 0!!! and also the capacity of the streets will be used much better! only advantages!!!

if i drive alone and faster instead of crawling behind some truck i will also have enough time saved to read the newspaper afterwards.

It's a great tech demo but I really don't see how it will ever work in the real world. First of all it will be expensive to implement, secondly it is exposed to accidents and thirdly, people are gonna be afraid to let their cars drive themselves. All that just to read the newspaper when you can listen to the radio? It's just not one of humanity's problems...
