Jordan Pilon, 17, a member of the competitive sprint kayak racing group at the Victoria Youth Paddling Club (VYPC), which is affiliated with the Ocean River Paddling Club (ORPC), recently qualified for his PacificSport Bronze card. As the Canadian Sport Centre in British Columbia, PacificSport delivers sport performance programs and services to provide competitive athletes and coaches with every advantage to win medals for Canada. Jordan is one of only two carded athletes in the sprint kayak discipline on Vancouver Island. To qualify for his bronze card Jordan had to meet rigid time standards which also place him on the provincial high performance squad.
Having just recently returned from a two-week provincial training camp in San Diego, California, Jordan was also recently selected as an A-Channel "Amazing Kid" which honours children who have made significant contributions in school, sports or the arts. Jordan was featured on the A-Channel News with Hudson Mack and awarded a $1,000 scholarship which he plans to use to help purchase his own sprint kayak to help him further pursue his athletic goals.
Jordan is also a highly-skilled outrigger paddler and steersperson and a member of the ORPC men's competitive outrigger program. He has competed at the international level in both sprint and distance races. In 2008, he sterned both the under-16 and under-19 Canadian junior men's teams at the World Outrigger Sprint Championships in Sacramento, California and in 2007 he paddled on a junior men's team that took first place, and a gold medal, at the Queen Lili'uokalani outrigger race in Kona, Hawaii.
