The Fossil Conversion glitch is one of several select glitches reported on Pokemonbug.oh.land.to, which fairly well known for reporting the dokokashira door glitch since Giginet uploaded footage of that glitch in 2006.
It allows the player to obtain any Pokémon and/or glitch Pokémon from Pokémon Red and Green from a fossil and is a faster alternative to the Ditto Trick, though because of issues when trading with Pokémon games of different languages they can only be traded between the Japanese versions.
This glitch requires at least 32 unique items in the PC, a fifth party Pokémon and a fossil to give to the scientist in Cinnibar Lab. The fossil Pokémon you receive depends on the total experience of the fifth Pokémon, though if it is higher than 255 it is that number modulo 256.
Steps:
1) Take a fossil to the scientist in the Cinnibar Lab.
2) Walk to the Pokémon Center and press the select button on the 32nd PC item (because it's only possible to hold 20 items in the bag)
3) Cancel the menu via B,B then walk to the Pokémon Mansion.
4) Open the Pokémon menu and select the fifth Pokémon to switch it and get a glitch Pokémon.
5) Return to the Cinnibar Lab and receive your fossil Pokémon. It would have converted to a Pokémon with the index number of what the fifth Pokémon's total experience was.
Background:
Select glitches involve switching items with Pokémon or attacks because of an oversight in the original Pokémon Red and Green where the 'selected' flag is still held down after choosing to switch a Pokémon closing the menu before switching it. Pokémon can then be 'switched with items' by pressing the A button to make the switch on the Pokémon menu in the middle of a battle whilst moves can be switched by pressing the select button on that move.If the selected item 'slot' is greater than the total party Pokémon (e.g. switching item 8 with Pokémon 1/Move 1 a Pokémon or move which doesn't exist is actually switched). Because of this, the game is forced to manage invalid data which is actually unrelated RAM data from elsewhere as if it was a Pokémon and switch it, which changes additional glitches when those variables are changed.
Totally using this when I start playing my Japanese version again. I am assuming this was fixed in Japanese Blue (I also have Japanese Red).

@Fortenium Yes. Japanese Blue removed the ability for you to exploit any of the select glitches completely because this and localizations disable the flag that says the select button is activated when you close the menu.

I should've noted as well that the many of the Red/Green glitch Pokémon are very different to the English Red/Blue ones. This isn't just the case between the Japanese and English versions but also the French and German versions, etc.

So this glitch means that you can obtain all glitch Pokémon in JP Red/Green? That's really good (unless there is already another way to do so).

@SnorlaxMonster Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if there are other select glitches which allow you to modify the species directly like this but this was the only one I could find. I'm assuming that you can't safely trade them to other localizations without the game freezing but I'll see if I can find a way.

@pfaccioxx but its modulo 256 so it's always within 0 and 255.
