Field Marshall tractor successfully winches a very stuck 35+ tons of low loader out of the mud at Hollowell 2007 despite the idea being laughed at. A Ruston Traction Engine had previously failed to achieve the same goal.
Driver of the Field Marshall said of the sceptics "They all know better, don't they?!"
A good winch, a good set of anchors and the grunting barking beast we know as the Field Marshall tractor.
Remember my late father being called upon to bring all the above, to pull a JCB that had got stuck on a riverbank whilst clearing debris from a bridge span during floods.
Happy memories father, a fine knowledgeable man and his Field Marshall working in unison.

And torque can be geared up infinitely. A moped engine could winch alow loader given the right gearing (and enough time, as said gearing would be extremely low!!)

Horse power is low but the single cylinder gives bags of torque.

Great to see a Marshall really working, we used one years ago for pulling up dead Elm trees. Since the values shot up, I've not seen many gets their boots muddy!

You couldn't expect a traction engine pulling using its wheels on mud to match an anchored tractor using a winch for pulling power! Even if the Ruston could get a grip, it still wouldn't equal a tractor & winch for pulling power.

Its mud tho, Ruston's would just spin because theirs TOO MUCH power. Whereas the single cylinder marshalls engine has a bit more grip and enough power not to spin.
