Rush is a Canadian rock band originally formed in August 1968, in the Willowdale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, composed of bassist, keyboardist, and lead vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. The band and its membership went through a number of re-configurations between 1968 and 1974, achieving their current form when Peart replaced original drummer John Rutsey in July 1974, two weeks before the group's first U.S. tour.

Since the release of the band's self-titled debut album in March 1974, Rush has become known for the instrumental skills of its members, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and libertarian philosophy, as well as addressing humanitarian, social, emotional, and environmental concerns.

Musically, Rush's style has evolved over the years, beginning in the vein of blues-inspired heavy metal on their first albums, then encompassing hard rock, progressive rock, and a period dominated by synthesizers. They have influenced various musical artists, including Metallica, and The Smashing Pumpkins as well as progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Primus, and Symphony X.

Rush has won a number of Juno Awards, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994. Over their careers, the members of Rush have been acknowledged as some of the most proficient players on their respective instruments, with each band member winning several awards in magazine readers' polls. As a group, Rush possesses 24 gold records and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records. According to the RIAA, Rush's sales statistics also place them fourth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold or platinum albums by a rock band. Rush also ranks 79th in U.S. album sales with 25 million units. Although total worldwide album sales are not calculated by any single entity, as of 2004 several industry sources estimated Rush's total worldwide album sales at over 40 million units.

If I could wave my magic wand...

I am made from the dust of the stars
And the oceans flow in my veins
Here I hide in the heart of the city
Like a stranger coming out of the rain

The evening plane rises up from the runway
Over constellations of light
I look down into a million houses
And wonder what you're doing tonight

If I could wave my magic wand
I'd make everything all right

I'm not one to believe in magic
But I sometimes have a second sight
I'm not one with a sense of proportion
When my heart still changes overnight

I had a dream of a winter garden
A midnight rendezvous
Silver, blue, and frozen silence
What a fool I was for you

I had a dream of the open water
I was swimming away out to sea
So deep I could never touch bottom
What a fool I used to be

If I could wave my magic wand
I'd set everybody free

I'm not one to believe in magic
Though my memory has a second sight
I'm not one to go pointing my finger
When I radiate more heat than light

Don't ask me
I'm just improvising
My illusion of careless flight
Can't you see
My temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light

Don't ask me
I'm just sympathizing
My illusions a harmless flight
Can't you see
My temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light

  • just rush pushing the envelope... always nice to see a band work in a different direction. but its always got that thread of class running through it. which only can be delivered by rush......

  • @fizbin321 It makes them interesting, though. It's one of the biggest things I admire about them ... the fact that their sound did change throughout the decades, and they didn't find one sound that everyone liked, and just stuck with that. They reach so many with different sounds and styles. It isn't "wimpy". Sometimes I'm just in the mood for calmer music. Working Man, 2112, Hemispheres... all of it's great... BU2B, S&A... great. But sometimes I love some synth or melodic music like this!

  • Listen to what "RUSH" says! "The more that things change,The more they stay the same"!

  • since firing terry brown Rush has never been the same - Moving Pictures& permanent waves were their last great albums - geddy's infatuation with brit new wave poisoned their prog rock roots and they've never come close to the heights they reached with brown - even when the material was good over production ruined the final results - Presto and Counterparts are the only albums of theirs since M.P. that I can stand to listen to - or concert albums where you can still capture them at their best.

  • Sometimes one must leave the soil for a journey. That's a good thing.

  • oh carajo! que recuerdos de la Universidad, nunca me dejará de sorprender Rush.

  • "I am made from the dust of stars" they wrote that before professor brian cox explained to the world what that meant! Rush you are my heroes....

  • I need to say this , we need to make it known that RUSH belongs in the Rock n Roll hall of fame , its hard to understand why they are not...

  • @savantiflag I actually agree with you, you dont have to love everything a band creates, but you should at least respect all they do if you are an actual fan. Personally, i like every single one of their albums except their first one, but i still respect its creation because they were just starting out. And as for hold your fire, i didnt like it at first, but after a few listens, it is in my top 5 rush albums. It really grows on you with multiple listens.

  • @fizbin321 I like this album so far, but I kinda agree, I mean, Moving Pictures, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, 2112, Signals, those were all masterpieces. This one is pretty good, but the album that I'd listen to the most would most likely be Moving Pictures.

  • Real fans stick with the band regardless of what they do. They are artists, and they express their creativity differently when they are going through different phases of their life. It's cool if people don't like it, though. Everyone's allowed to have their likes and dislikes!

I personally like it. Nice change of pace.
