Gion kouta n'est pas un minyō. C'est un ryūkōka (litt. « Chanson à la mode ») qui a été composé en 1910 par Kōka Sasa. Les paroles, un très beau poème de Mikihiko Nagata, évoquent le chagrin d'amour d'une geiko (geisha) de Gion, le quartier des plaisirs de Kyōto, ainsi que la beauté des quatre saisons dans l'ancienne capitale impériale.
