and as the car gets more broken in it is going to keep getting better gas mileage.

Well for all you skeptics, I have a 1998 TDI beetle with 177k miles all original and still get 50+ mpg. Better then a Prius :) and with every 10k oil change there is less than one pint of waist I filter my used oil and it goes into the fuel tank, I believe vw TDI is the overall most echo friendly oil powered car we can buy in the states,

This video you made is FOR REAL......
We have a 2006 TDI Jetta........ and are turning the same numbers that you are!! When I tell my friends about the fuel MPG....No one realy believes you (they think that you are stretching the truth"
You as a driver HAS TO SEE IT FOR YOUR SELF to believe it!!
This is a fun car to drive......WE LOVE IT!!

Manual transmission?

Oh wait... 60.7 mph when you estimate to the nearest tenth. I thought you said 115 miles. Its 116 miles. I just really want a Jetta TDI soon
-
To that, you got 60.1 mpg average what my calcuator said, and my mom drives a VW Passat and she uses up about half a tank going that far... because she doesn't use cruise control on the highway and is mostly a city driver

The dealers are forced to put that on the window by law, its the implied warranty. The fuel economy is EPA estimated by the CAFE standards. They seem to extremely exagerate under estimate diesel mpg and over exagerate hybrid mpg. It's because they test it on a dyno that doesn't at all simulate real world driving. Smart huh? That's our govunmint
If you topped the tank the first time and didn't top the tank the second time, you've shorted the amount of fuel you used to travel that 116 miles. Next time, you have to replicate the first fill-up to get an accurate miles per gallon reading. I'm not saying the diesels won't get 50+mpg, just that your method is flawed here.

@ghrpdx That is very possible. Thanks for pointing that out. If I were to do it again I'd use just one gas station, the same pump, the same pumping method, an interstate at low traffic conditions, AND I'd do it multiple times to try to get some kind of average. Right now I'm saving up for a different project, so I'll leave this it to another driver...who may have access to a test track!
