The loader either threw the 105mm brass out the hatch or stood on the spent brass and yes it sucked. M-60 A1 Marine tanker Desert storm here :)

@tread140 Okay, I just had the wrong idea about the amount of ammo this tank could carry, I thought it was more...though with hindsight 42 or something 120mm rounds ARE a, excuse the expression, shitload. And if you're at the business end of that smoothbore, one is probably already one too many ;-)
Fascinating piece of technology, thanks for your answers.
Hm, this question may sound stupid to everyone who knows how a tank works, but...happens to the cartridges after they are ejected? Are they just rolling around at the floor? 0o

@SyrusDrake Yup! Although if you watch right at :30, notice that only the small base of the round is ejected- this is because the newer 120mm rounds have a combustible case that literally burns up when the gun is fired. (Cool stuff!) The original 105mm gun ejected full size brass cases, which I was told you could only fire 4 or 5 rounds before the loader had to chuck them out of the turret. There is also a kind of small cage below the breech to help collect the ejected base/case.

@tread140 Huh, cool to know, thanks.
Sorry to kinda spam up your comments section, but: How do you get the bases out of the tank under heavy fire, if there's some amount which has piled up? Is there some sort of "back door", because you can't just open the top hatch, can you?

@SyrusDrake Hehe no problem! Under heavy fire...I'm going to guess you dont. During gunnery rotations, I think the most bases I remember collecting around on the floor was about 15. There are only (from my bad memory) 18 rounds in the ready rack, another 18 in the semi-ready rack behind the commander. (And 6 more in storage in the sub-turret) Point being you would really need to disengage from combat to transfer from semi-ready to ready, so it could easily hold 18 bases from the ready rack.

@44centz I'm pretty sure its the hydraulic pump, although now that you mention it it was just something you got used to and never gave much thought.
