Footage of the Bluebell line from East Grinsted to Lewes, filmed in the period before and after closure by British Railways in 1958. Includes film of the last day of service, an interlude at a flooded Lewes Station featuring a Billington K Class 2-6-0 struggling through in 1960, and scenes from the early days of the line after preservation.

  • Many thanks for this extremely rare piece of film. Never before have I seen any footage of Newick & Chailey station - a real gem for those who remember the old Lewes to East Grinstead railway line before the preservation of the section north of Sheffield Park. Interesting scenes of Culver junction and the route into Lewes too. Marvellous! Any more like this?

  • Very possibly. I am slowly chomping my way through quite a collection! Keep 'em peeled.

  • Wonderful well done !

  • where did akll that water come from at Lewes?

  • What an insight! Thanks!

  • @revbigjohn It is definitely the directors saloon shortly after its arrival on the railway.

  • Very nice film, if the owner has a full quality version we could do a lot with the first part to make it clearer and remove the raveges of time. Please get in touch as there is much detail there lost in the darkness of time!

  • brilliant made my day finding this.

  • Superb video - thankyou. Any identification of the front (south end) coach in the final Bluebell shot - its green, maybe the Director's Carriage?

  • Great video showing the floods and evevrything.
