@pappymcdamnit Thank you for sharing. Leadbelly was the earliest recording I had heard. That is quite the useful information to have! Thanks so much for sharing!
@pappymcdamnit ... Pappy your history is spot on. This song is well over 100 yrs old with no credit to the writer. Jamey Johnson's version was more of the nirvana version than Leadbelly or Mr Monroe. Dolly Parton also recorded this song and you will find the words have been changed on many of the versions. Because the song is in the public domain so there are no legal issues with taking liberties with the song.
@chelseacat13phd This song is long older than Leadbelly, and bluegrass as a music wasnt even in existence until after WWII that ended in 1945. Bluegrass is a combination of several different styles of music, including blues and what is now referred to as "old-time" music that originated in Appalachia and was the offspring of old Irish and Scottish music, which could be where this song comes from originally but is unknown. Sorry, I'm a serious music lover LOL
I've heard this song by Bill Monroe, but as usual, I never heard it right until Jamey Johnson left his mark on it. The strength of his voice in the phrasing sends chills up the spine. I hope he releases his cover of this old song. It's awesome!
I was under the impression this song was written in the 40's by Leadbelly. I am pretty sure that's the origin. But I am curious to think it may have been bluegrass first!
