Open the tipi door every day, collect rainwater before freezeup, you know, the usual.

  • Nancy. Off your subject here. wondered if you feed the birds. make your own suet? I so enjoyed the birds while I was in nc for the month. I make my own suet. I did for years when I lived in ct, too. I love to watch the birds. nc is loaded with bluebirds and they were coming to it, too. I was pretty excited about that. I put raisins in the mixture that I made. have fun. you are special. sandy

  • I put the untouched fat in a feeder and hang it up. If you heat it up, then it kills the enzymes. The animals and birds all need the enzymes.

  • Nancy. didn't know that. I use lard. melt it down. add chunky peanut butter, oatmeal, raisins, cranberries, wheat flour, etc. I miss doing this. I did it while in nc because it certainly was cold enough. they even had a few flurries while I was there. I sat at the computer and watched the suet feeder. it needed a stoplight. sandy

  • I'm sure there is lots of nourisment in what you give them. I am pretty lazy to do all that. they do have access to the compost pile, though. My mom did what you do, too.

I love it when the feeder is busy!

  • what is tallow?

  • beef fat that you heat until it is liquid and then pour it off. That's tallow.

  • a few inches so when it boils through your fat it can retreive all the bits out of it. Then when it solidifies later, rub the junk off the bottom of the fat, all the bits there.

  • thanks, i'll try that. how much water? some say use just 1/8 inch in the pot?

  • Thanks. It works. The light comes through the yellow glass and makes me feel good!

  • It is rendered beef fat. It's lard only this is from a cow.

  • If you clarify it, boil it with water for a minute or two, the grainly stuff and other bits will separate out and be just under the tallow on the water when it's hardened.
