Why do we play licks ?
1 ) Increase musical vocabulary
2 ) Improve technique
3 ) It's fun !!
But remember that the main goal is to add those licks, or licks by your own, into your arsenal to play them in context inside one musical piece.
In this lesson I'll try to show you that it is also important to try licks we've been practicing in "real" context in riffs, songs etc. Why ? Because sometimes you could not play it as you always did in your practice routine. Maybe you will have to change some fingerings or hand position. For instance the example used in this video, if you play it on its own you can do it in the first position (fret 1). But if we are playing before the lick a D5 chord, then it will be easier to start the lick in the third position (fret 3) and then shifting to the first position.
The lick used in this video is a typical Randy Rhoads lick used in Mr. Crowley. The lick is the D minor scale. It incorporates legato and alternate picking (and slide in the second version).
crazy train !!!!! (isn't it?)

Haha! Awesome, thanks brother.
Isn't there a third way to play it (replacing the b string 1 fret note) using the G string 5 fret note? Does Randy play it like you just showed us in the video? Sorry for all the questions, I appreciate the video immensely and just want to get a thorough understanding of how to play this lick.
Again, thanks for going through all the trouble of making a video just to help me learn this lick. That's very, very kind of you man.

@Greyswyndir No problem man!! :) There are many differents ways to play this lick (yours is correct too). Actually I can think more than 5 hahaha No idea if Randy played it in this way.
When you play a lick, there are some more convenient ways to do it, but you should try to use the more comfortable for you. I prefer to play this lick alone in 1st position and using legato and open strings. Inside the riff I prefer to start at 3th-position and slide to 1st-position. Hope it helps.
