"The Black Hole" 1979
by Walt Disney Films

This was regarded as the last big special effect production to be made under the "old studio system." All of the elaborate special effects were created within the Disney studio and not farmed out to outside special effects companies.

It stars Maximilian Schell, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Anthony Perkins, and Ernest Borgnine. The voices of the main robot characters in the film are provided by Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens.

The plot was inspired by Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, filmed by Disney in 1954. Alan Dean Foster novelized the screenplay.

The film was nominated for cinematography and visual effects Academy Awards and was notable for being the first Disney film not to have a universal rating, due to mild language and scenes of human death never seen in a Disney production before. This film led the company towards experimenting with more adult-oriented films, which would eventually lead to the creation of its Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures arms to handle films considered too mature in nature to carry the Walt Disney label.

  • 0:47 such a realistc looking special effect for the time

  • This is when really great movies were made without the glossy hollow computer graphics! This is a creepy movie and the music (John Barry ) is fabulous. That exoskeleton ship( The Cygnus) is awesome

  • I love you Maximillion!

  • When I was little the graphics of the black hole movie mislead me. I thought there was a literal whirlpool drain of gas and matter floating out in space sucking things in. I know now, this entirely not the case at all in regards to it's shape as shown in the movie, it's more complex.

1 tablespoon of black hole matter can weigh as much as 5 suns in earth weight.

  • @einc70 2 of disneys very best.

  • I'm stating the obvious but at least the acting was a whole lot better than Star Wars.

  • " S U P E R ! "

  • Wow, this doesn't hold up at all. Wow, bath tub with red paint swirling around. Styrofoam robot with cartoon eyes. Wow, this is horrible. Funny that Alien, Star Trek TMP, and Black Hole all came out at the same time period. One was the inspiration for so many others, another was an 80s update yet a 2001 rip-off, and the other a cheesemafest that doesn't even compare to Logan's Run… the made-for-tv version.

  • Black hole and Tron were the 2 movies of the time that I remember well..
