In all the history of the American music , there is two versions that I consider as the two best versions of all time. Number one, the Vic Damone's version and the other the Buddy Clark's version. Both charted as hit parade for the two of them and both released in 1949

The two versions you mention are great, especially the one by Damone. I also have heard a very good one by Frankie Laine, but the best I've heard is by Eddie Fisher. Unfortunately he never recorded it, but there is a shortened version by him here on youtube.

I love this version of this song! I first heard it from a film, but the song was the Italian "Matinata"(?)
